Knowing the shamrock

According to Wikipedia, the shamrock has been used as a symbol of Ireland since the 18th century, in a similar way to how a rose is used for England.

The first link between St. Patrick and the shamrock appears in 1675 on an image showing St. Patrick preaching to a crowd while holding a shamrock.

The shamrock is worn by people in their hats each year on the 17th day of March, which is called St Patrick's Day.

Cash buyers help propell the housing market

According to the Wells Fargo Economics Group, "new home sales surged 15.7 percent in January, suggesting that the housing recovery remained intact throughout the year-end budget battles and lead-up to the budget sequester. Sales ofexisting homes also increased modestly in January, and even though housing starts fell slightly...   One peculiar aspect of this housing recovery has been the unusually large role cash purchases have played in driving sales and prices higher. Cash purchases accounted for 36 percent of all existing home sales in 2012, which is roughly twice the historic average. The rise in cash purchases is being led by investors purchasing properties to rent. The trade looks all the more appealing given today’s exceptionally low interest rates and paltry returns from holding bonds."

Japanese Garden celebrates first 50 years

Portland's Japanese Garden celebrates it's 50th anniversary this year. There are special events scheduled at the Open Pavilion from February 1 -10 to recognize the role of the many community groups that helped shape the history of the garden. Also on display will be historical photos and information commemorating Garden history.

End of year is typically the slowest time for the Real Estate market and this year is no exception. As a result, the overall number of South Waterfront active condominium listings is now just eleven.

Atwater Place had a solid year selling their available inventory of new units.   Below are year-end numbers for the entire district. Of the 62 units sold last year, 7 were bank owned and 10 were short sales.
